I am a Transition Officer for the School of Computing with the main role of supporting undergraduate students during their transition to university, from initial contact to the end of stage 1.
My work in EPiC has interested me in research involving teaching styles and pedagogy. I am the Stage Coordinator for second-year undergraduate students and I have an active role in undergraduate recruitment.
I have been a lecturer in Computing Science since 2006. I am now Degree Programme Director with responsibility for all aspects of delivery of our undergraduate degrees from admissions to graduation, from curriculum content to student wellbeing.
I joined the school in 2014 as a Transition Officer supporting stage one students with the transition into university life. I am now a lecturer, teaching UG and PG students, I also chair the Equality, Diversity and Inclusion committee for the school.
In 2014 I received a Vice-Chancellor's Education Excellence Award and in 2017 became a National Teaching Fellow. I was promoted to Professor of Educational Practice in Computer Science in 2019.
I am the Academic Lead for Employability in the School of Computing, and my other duties include Placement Coordinator, Stage 3 Coordinator and Demonstrator Coordinator. My research invovles looking at the role of metacognition (the idea of thinking about thinking or being aware of one's awareness) in computer science education.
Since 1987, I have been at the University of Newcastle upon Tyne where I am currently a Senior Lecturer in Computing Science. My main research interests are in fault-tolerance, reliability and mobile distributed systems.
As Director of Education, I am responsible for the overall quality and development of teaching and learning in the School. I have PhD students that are researching a wide variety of topics.
I handle the administration for undergraduate and postgraduate students within Computing. Since September 2014 I have been involved in EPiC's working with schools programme, which involves organising and delivering workshops for local school children.
I am the stage one coordinator and support all stage one undergraduate modules. In addition, as the stage one demonstrator coordinator I train and organise postgraduate demonstrators and marking teams for these modules.Since 2019, I have undertaken the role of Senior Tutor in Computing.
